More about Running Out of Poverty
In Kibera Slums, lies many untold stories: Such is the story of Kennedy, a young boy born in prison to an unknown father and a terminally ill mother, who had to assume a role of sole bread-winner at the tender age of 8 but now at 16, full of promise as an athlete. And that of Mercy, a young girl who dropped out of school and got married at the age of 12, and by the age of 17 she is a mother of three children and living in abject poverty in the slums. These are just two of hundreds of stories of children enrolled in our program.
Using sports and education as tools, we aim to give children like Kennedy and Mercy the opportunities worthy of their promises, to teach them how to use their misfortunes in life as a motivation for their sporting success. For all the boys and girls in our program, sport is an opportunity to find happiness today and hope for tomorrow. In very concrete ways, our work has improved the lives of individual children, families and communities. For where the child sees a barrier, we see an opportunity.
