More about RIHP Hockey Queensland Rubies
RIHP Qld Rubies is an amateur hockey team of young indigenous female leaders. This team is the first and only recognized indigenous hockey team that competes internationally and as importantly seeks to increase awareness and address health, employment and education issues through GOALS FOR LIFE. Sport is known for its ability to improve an individual’s physical activity, skills, and general fitness and strength however there are often unseen advantages which can affect the entire community. The Rubies works with community in a holistic approach to assist sustainability and building community capacities and this has led to positive outcomes in the areas of personal health, safer communities and increased educational opportunity which are three of the Closing the Gap on indigenous disadvantage ‘building blocks’.
RIHP Qld Rubies seek to challenge the traditional norms and create innovative programs that impact positively on increased school attendances, increased self –esteem and empowerment for young indigenous girls, support healthy eating choices and vocation education programs that lead to employment opportunities. RIHP Qld Rubies impact has been so significant that more and more communities are seeking Rubies involvement and proposals for a Centre of Excellence in Far North Queensland is gaining momentum.
