More about Right To Play Wenchuan Earthquake Project
The Wenchuan earthquake in China last year left 90,000 people dead or missing and almost 5 million homeless. Right To Play joined the Wenchuan Earthquake Taskforce in September 2008, focusing specifically on rehabilitating traumatized and displaced children.
Our programmes will be tailored to specific age groups and promote play and education with a focus on female and disability inclusion. 33 teachers were trained in the fourth quarter of 2008 and a further 220 will be trained in 2009. They will implement Right To Play programming for thousands of young children in newly rehabilitated schools and community centres.
Local stakeholders have been engaged in the project at every stage, with teachers, social workers and volunteers trained in our unique sport for development techniques. This will greatly increase the sustainability and scope of our programmes, allowing messages on child rights, inclusion and development to be disseminated amongst key stakeholders in the community.
In addition to local schools and community groups, various institutional bodies support Right To Play’s work, including the Beijing Normal University and the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs. This ensures the project is properly contextualised and that relevant parties support our work in the long term.
