More about Reconstruction of social fabric in Burudian communities and peacekeeping through sport activities
Sport Sans Frontieres uses the power of sport and play to empower children and youth with essential life skills so they become contributing participants in their society. SSF started its program in Burundi in order to respond to the needs of the community after a long and deadly civil war (300.000 victims from 1993 to 2005), opposing the Hutu and Tutsi tribes.
Since then, the social and economic situation of the country has remained fragile: Burundi is among the poorest countries in the world, 67% of the Burundian population living with less than $1 per day, and tensions between ethnic groups are still palpable. Sport Sans Frontieres implements its action in Burundi within the challenges of the democratic transition which started off in 2005 (national reconciliation, peace building, economic and social development) through the reconstruction of a social network.
The organization uses sport and play to foster dialogue between ethnic groups and communities. Sport is also a way to promote citizenship and raising awareness on social issues.
