More about Rural Challengers-an audacious initiative
An initiative taken in 2007 this project began by giving free coaching in kho-kho for those who could not afford training. As these boys were from economically and socially backwards areas , we also provided them nutrient supplements and helped them participate in matches and tournaments in different cities by providing them free uniforms, food and travel allowance.
So far, 1000 of our students have participated in tournaments in other cities, 400 at the state level and 100 at the national level. 40 of these students got free seats in colleges through sports quota. . We planned to expand this to more districts and villages and to the girl students too. We have started partnering with Physical education teachers/institutes and youth development programmes like the Duke of Edinburgh's award and Youth for Human rights India.
We have been holding state level tournament to select quality players form each district, in partnership with theTamilnadu State Association for kho-kho. These players then participate in district, state as well as national level tournaments after attending the AASSD training camps. We have done this without any permanent funds but through fundraising from friends and business organizations.
