More about Read and Raise
Sport and physical activity serves as the common denominator for social engagement between City of Hartford Elementary/Middle School Students and University of Connecticut staff and students. The goal for students at participating City of Hartford schools is to read 10,000 books and complete 10,000 worksheets at each school. Over the span of this 5 month initiative students and staff from UCONN visit with the City of Hartford students multiple times per week to read books, complete worksheets, and to engage in sport and physical activities as a reward for the Hartford students' reading efforts.
In the fall of 2007, former UCONN Academic and Athletic All American Emeka Okafor made a financial gift to the Husky Sport organization. As a token of gratitude for his support, the UCONN and Hartford Communities have combined to "Read" and then "Raise" money that will be donated to Emeka's "One Million African Lives" initiative which has a goal of raising $15 million to fight the spread of HIV/AIDS and Malaria in Sub-Saharan Africa.
