More about Rape Prevention, Assertiveness & Boundaries Setting
IWD arms women, girls and children against rape and endangerment, it implies that one can (and indeed should) be equipped with courage, spirit, knowledge, and determination, whether or not one is armed with an extrinsic weapon. We believe that rape, gender violence, HIV/AIDS and the absence of rights for women and children can be addressed immediately through the use of prevention strategies and Self-Defense being one of them.
We intervene in an immediate accessible way to break the cycle of ignorance and violence. As opposed to many programs that are only focused on aftercare, ours endeavor to give the target groups preventive mechanisms of addressing the scourges that faces the society in which they live and ways of bringing about a lasting solution through simple Self-Defense training skills. Our clients are mostly impoverished, living in high risk slum areas.
Many of our teen girls cannot afford secondary school fees. Some volunteer in their community, some drift into prostitution to help support siblings, some are being raped in their homes in order to avoid being thrown into the street. The adult women are usually day laborers, mothers, and teachers. We also do outreach Self- Defense training sessions with commercial sex workers and have classes just for them. In a nutshell, we tailor our Self-Defense training to suit the needs of those most in need.
