With over 90% of participants coming from impoverished families, our girls need to be engaged in after-school activities capable of abating risky behaviors, poor health outcomes, developmental delays, teen parenthood, and academic failure. Education is one of our key areas of focus. We provide academic assistance in the form of tutors, academic counseling and scholarships.
The girls arrive early to receive help with their homework or to work on special projects planned by our two CPS teachers/coaches who also played soccer at Notre Dame and Northwestern. We recently implemented a 6-week writing program that will help the girls with these skills and will allow for free expression on important topics.
We also help the girls find scholarships to attend private schools, to participate in top club soccer clubs, and to eventually earn college scholarships. Arrangements are being made for girls entering their junior year to begin the USEmpowered program, a local non-profit that provides the resources necessary for students to attend college. We understand that education is the gateway to a better life, and in these days, sport can be utilized as the gateway to a better education.
