More about GLASA's GoGirlGo!
GLASA’s GoGirlGo! Program uses recreational sports and fitness activities for solutions to the many problems faced by those with a physical or visual impairment. The program offers adaptive dance, yoga and creative movement, adaptive aquatics in swimming, aerobics, scuba, water polo, kayaking and rowing, wall climbing, table tennis, bowling, track and field, an overnight activity camp and beach activity BBQ.
The girls in the program have experienced the many benefits of improved health, stamina and self-esteem, and increased levels of independence and participation in their schools and other adaptive sports programs in their communities. Approximately 25% children under 17 are either overweight or obese, and inactivity is much more common among females than males. According to a Paralympic study, students with disabilities tended to be spectators more often than students without disabilities, with only 1 in 25 children with a physical disability actively participating in sports or a recreational fitness activity. The problem is significantly increased in lower-socioeconomic areas.
A girl’s participation in sports or physical activity declines significantly as she gets older and if living with a physical or visual impairment, can quickly lead to social isolation, fatigue, pain, heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and difficulty performing daily living activities.
