More about Goals For Girls
The project started in May 2006, when a group of parents from a Slum in the City of Buenos Aires, “Villa 31”, decided to invite volunteers to begin a sports program. The parents saw a lack of recreational activities available in their neighborhood for teenage girls facing the potential dangers of drug addiction, prostitution, and violence. They chose soccer as the main activity and looked to adress other issues as well.
The project now includes these four components: Leadership: The girls participating in the program must follow the rules established by themselves as a group. Furthermore, through the soccer team, they have a chance to realize their full potentials as young leaders. Gender: By taking part in a team, we believe the participants can grow as gifted and independent women, fully aware of their worth and become aware of the value of a shared team effort. Community Involvement: We encourage the girls to demonstrate the kind of behavior they would like to see in their neighborhood, so that they will become examples for other young women. Health Education: Our informal talks and meetings provide the girls with essential information about hygiene, safety, and general well-being to help them live healthy lives.
