More about Girls in the Game, Varsity Squad
Since 1995, Girls in the Game's comprehensive, evidence-based programs have addressed the health needs of over 3,000 girls per year, and equipped them with the skills and confidence they need to become healthy, successful young women. Programming incorporates three components – physical activity, nutrition and health education, and leadership development. Research shows that girls who are physically active and involved in healthy-lifestyle programs have higher grades, are more likely to graduate, experience higher self-esteem, and are less likely to engage in risky behaviors.
Using a variety of traditional and non-traditional sports, as well as leadership development and nutrition education, programs allow girls to enroll at age 7 and stay involved through 18, keeping them involved, year-round as they grow up.
Through Varsity Squad, girls in grades 9-12 use the skills they’ve learned at Girls in the Game programs to educate adults, their peers and younger girls about the benefits of sports and girls’ health issues. Throughout Chicago, our teens serve as Girls in the Game ambassadors by leading interactive workshops in schools and parks, meeting with corporate leaders about the needs of girls, expanding their knowledge of sports and health-related careers, and representing Girls in the Game within the community.
