Standard Chartered (SCB) launched Goal as a pilot in 2006 in New Delhi, India, reaching 70 girls with netball training and life skills education. At the end of 2010, we had programmes in four countries – India, Nigeria, Jordan, and China – and reached nearly 14,000 girls with a programme that covers the key skills girls need to succeed: financial literacy, health, rights, communication, and teamwork. Goal aims to reach 100,000 girls by 2013. Goal serves girls between the ages of 12 and 20.
Sessions each week teach the basics of a sport, like netball or football, and education modules. Girls who demonstrate leadership skills become Goal Champions and are trained to deliver Goal to their peers. This year, we’ve launched pilots to help our Champions become economically empowered by supporting them to reach further education, access finance, or attend vocational training. In some cases, we will employ these girls at our local SCB branches or find them positions with our suppliers or clients.
Goal is delivered by NGO partners with support from SCB staff in each market. Staff “volunteer coordinators” plan events for our volunteers which include facilitating sessions, playing matches, mentoring, and assisting with events.
