More about Get Started with Football
Get Started with Football is a short engagement programme which uses football as a vehicle to inspire young people to take the first steps towards increasing their confidence, skills and employability, whilst also gaining a nationally recognised coaching qualification. The hardest to reach young people, aged 16-25, join Get Started with Football programmes, including those who are long-term unemployed, educational underachievers, from offending backgrounds and who are in or leaving care. 12 to 15 participants undertake a minimum of 5 days group activity, aimed at developing vitals soft skills such as confidence, communication and teamwork, which is delivered by the Trust in partnership with professional football clubs.
This activity culminates in a final challenge which brings together the skills they have learnt (e.g. coaching a primary school). Following completion of the programme, participants receive three months of progression support to help them move into training, education, volunteering or employment. Uniquely, the Trust delivers Get Started with Football programmes in Young Offender Institutions. Commenting on this, Minister of State for Youth Justice, David Hanson said, “It’s refreshing to see large organisations working with charities such as The Trust to reduce re-offending in such an innovative and successful way”.
