FURD works to promote racial harmony and community cohesion through involvement in sport, with the key objective of using sport as a hook to the activities and programmes that can bring people together through their common love of a particular sport, and then begin to learn from and understand each other.
The Football Unites, Racism Divides project (FURD)started in 1995 as a community-led response to the specific issue of racial harassment of ethnic minorities associated with football fans in the Sharrow area of Sheffield, in the vicinity of the Bramall Lane stadium, home to Sheffield United FC.
A group of football fans, youth workers and young people met together with local authority staff, police and politicians and decided to start the Football Unites, Racism Divides project (FURD) to challenge the racism that was a regular occurrence, and to increase the participation of ethnic minorities in football, as players, coaches, referees, administrators and supporters.
