When we were approached by a group of our blind and visually impaired young women with the idea of an awareness campaign based around a groundbreaking tour to play cricket against the only other female blind cricket team in the world, we were happy to help.
The Change Foundation undertook a consultation with a working group of eight blind and visually impaired young women and with disabled people’s organisations. It became clear that there was very little specific provision for girls and women but the demand and need for this provision was great.
The aims of the project were as follows:
To play the first ever international series involving female blind cricketers to help develop the following:
i) A supportive peer group for the new ‘England Blind Women’s Cricket Team’
ii) To challenge their perceptions about self-image and develop their independent travel skills.
iii) To inspire women and girls in the UK, in Nepal and across the world to take up sport as a means of self-expression and self- empowerment
To help develop awareness of the talents of women and girls with a visual impairment
