More about First Descents Programming in 2013
A first descent in kayaking is the first time a particular stretch of river has ever been successfully kayaked. Each year, 75,000 young adults are diagnosed with cancer. Given the complex nature of cancer, each of these individuals faces their own first descent during their personal battle to survive and live fully in spite of cancer. Contrary to older and younger demographics, young adults have not seen improvement in cure rates since 1975. Largely to blame for this statistic, young adults are caught during a pivotal phase of their lives: building a career, starting a family, and creating financial stability.
In support of this battle, First Descents has designed its programming to present authentic adventure in an age appropriate, supportive environment. Through allowing participants to experience the highs and lows inherent to kayaking, surfing, and climbing we empower them to move beyond simply surviving cancer. Through channeling the powerful nature of time spent on the rock, river, or in the ocean we allow participants to approach the uncertainties of their future as they would paddle their own first descent: with confidence, determination, and a strong support team.
