More about Cross Boarder Peace Building through Sports
The communities in GHA have fought over scarce resources for as long as history. In particular conflicts centres on cattle rustling, which is an age old part of the pastoralists’ culture. In modern times the conflicts are exacerbated by access to small arms, politically motivated violence and the increased climatic variability stemming from Global Warming. The consequences of these conflicts have been sustained suspicion, hate, poverty and marginalisation of the communities.
Based on the founders world class achievements and the proud Kenyan tradition for excellence in athletics, the foundation is successfully using peace races to bring warring communities together to provide an avenue for self examination as well as provide an opportunity for the Foundation and its partners to get a deep understanding of the individual conflicts and to provide appropriate actions to address them.
The races enable the communities to appreciate each other and to build values based on sportsmanship. The races build connections and networks between communities and establish valuable contacts for future peace activities. The races also provide an advocacy platform for girl child rights, HIV/AIDS, education, health and development aimed at poverty reduction.
