More about Calthorpe Futsal
The project has chosen to use Futsal to engage with young people in the London ward of Kings Cross. Youth unemployment in the Borough of Camden has increased by 87% since 2008. The project aims to address the deprivation and disadvantage of young residents by providing opportunities and raising aspirations. Through a programme of training sessions, leagues and tournaments the project focuses on six key principles drawn from the game of Futsal: fun, teamwork, respect, knowledge, spatial awareness and control. These principles are embedded across all activities, both on and off the pitch. Young people are involved in the planning and delivery of tournaments and events, which equips them with practical learning and enterprise skills. The project believes Futsal is an ideal sport for tackling social issues because it is: Accessibile to all - it’s easy to learn and play. Designed for small, urban spaces – allowing engagement to take place locally. Encourages fair play through an accumulated foul rule. Focuses on skill and passing rather than power and aggression by using a smaller, weighted ball that stays on the floor. Emphasizes control and removes the need to shoulder barge by playing to lines.
