More about Coaches for Social Change - Civil Service
A breakthrough program created in order to raise awareness among the young Arab community regarding their rights to participate in the national Civil Service program, allow them to receive equal rights to their Jewish counterparts, and at the same time, contribute to their community. Though military service in Israel is obligatory, Arabs are excluded from this obligation and the benefits connected to it. “Civil Service” is an innovative alternative.
Young people who do not go into the army volunteer for two years, becoming eligible for the same benefits (loans for studying, mortgages and more) as soldiers. Arab society in Israel has legitimate fears that Civil Service supports a military and social policy they do not agree with not serving the true needs of individuals or communities. Mifalot has established a viable and fruitful Service for young Arabs: volunteers become responsible for building football teams and educational and social action in their own communities.
Participants are eligible for State benefits, and service is in their communities, in a program viewed as legitimate by all sides. This program guarantees its own continuity, as the children participating in the programs will later be those participating in the civil service program, becoming the leaders of the future. This is true sport for development.
