More about Coaches Across Continenets and Kigoma/Ujiji Partnership for Education

In the Kigoma/Ujiji region of Tanzania teachers did not even bother to teach sport in most schools; there was no equipment, fields, and often footwear. When Nicholuas Achimpota contacted CaC he had a vision, he believed that the inclusion of sport could dramatically transform the region’s educational system and increase students’ learning.

In 2008, CaC ran our first program in Kigoma. We returned again in 2009, and will conduct the final year of our three-year Hat-Trick Initiative there in 2010. Utilizing our cascading train-the-trainer model, this year CaC will teach at least one teacher from every area school and work with an additional 125 teachers at our teacher training school in Kisulu. Each teacher will participate in 30+ hours of training and will learn how to incorporate sport into their teaching.

CaC’s Kigoma/Ujiji project has made significant impact. In March 2010 the Tanzanian Deputy Minister of Information, Culture and Sports visited Kigoma and met with community stakeholders. They discussed how Kigoma has become one of the country’s leaders in Sport for Social Development. To date CaC has trained more than 175 teachers who in turn have taught 15,000+ children the importance of staying in school, HIV/AIDS education, and female empowerment.
