The National Hockey League (NHL) and the NHL Players’ Association (NHLPA) are providing free access for parents to Hockey Scholar™ - its online STEM curriculum for elementary and middle-school students that’s part of the Future Goals Program. Previously, it had only been available to teachers.
For the first time since its launch in 2014, the Hockey Scholar program, which consists of 12 hockey-themed learning modules, will be available to both teachers and parents in order to ease the new challenges that are presented with country lockdowns.
Using the fast-paced, exciting game of hockey as a STEM learning vehicle, the user-friendly program helps students understand the real world applications of science and math principles. It promotes STEM education with the following topics:
-Engineering behind equipment
-Calculating ice surface area and volume
-Circumference, area of circles, radius & diameter
-States of matter & phase changes
-Examination of mass, velocity and kinetic energy
-Manipulating variables to run experiments
-Data analysis and drawing conclusions
Hockey Scholar™ was developed in conjunction with EVERFI, a leading education platform (and Beyond Sport partner) and was developed in accordance with US state math and science standards and Canadian provincial math standards.
Along with increased online access to Future Goals educational resources, select players from the NHL will play a role in helping teachers, parents and students connect and interact with the online material. The online learning approach meets kids where they are has delivered impressive results, with students showing an 82% increase in their STEM skills. Parents and teachers can access the program for free at NHL.com/FutureGoals.
