More about The Movement
Harnessing the brand and reputation of Derby County Football Club, partner organisations such as Nike UK and opinions of girls has supported the development of a range of sport and recreational programmes. Consequently this has addressed key issues they often face, including the reduction of anti social behaviour, addressing health inequalities and increasing levels of physical activity. This was achieved through:
- Removing barriers to participation – responding to needs, delivering activities when and where girls wanted
- Promoted fun and social opportunities to engage in sports/physical activities
- Ensuring programme is youth led and empower participants to influence decisions, policy and services delivered
- Nurturing participants to facilitate development of aspirations and confidence to become role models
- Delivering workshops combining physical activity, health, positive body image and promoting positive self perception
- Using community development approaches, which capacity builds young people to run their own programmes once funding ceases
- Empowering participants to have a degree of autonomy and ownership
- Increase social participation and behavioural change
- Combining different messages and media to ensure it reaches all young people
- Research: Leeds Metropolitan University - 9000 Derby girls consulted, using diary sheets, focus group discussions, pupil satisfactory survey
