More about The implement-ation of an exercise referral service in a Primary and Secondary school environment
The 'Exercise Inclusion Service' operates in primary schools and secondary schools and in the community of deprived areas in London. The service uses a psycho-physical programme to target students with issues like weight problems/ physical and mental well-being and bullying. The programme is essentially a 3-phase programme which addresses both the psychological aspects of obesity as well the physical needs possessed by people who are obese.
The programme lasts 36 weeks, which is split up into three, twelve week blocks. Each phase progresses from the next and involves the following structure:
- All students undergo a baseline fitness assessment and a standard psychological assessment to assess the start point.
- They then undergo a 12week programme of fitness guidance and educational/ psychological training.
After this point the students are retested to look for improvements made during this period. The process continues in the same manner for each of the three phases until the student. The project also targets children who are risk of permanent exclusion. A home DVD is available which compliments the sessions in the project. The duration and break down of the programme is the same as the above one.
