More about TackleAfrica HIV Awareness Football Coaching Manual
The idea behind the our football coaching manual is simple but ingenious, to take HIV education onto the pitch and deliver specially designed drills that integrate football coaching and HIV education, improving football skills and encouraging behaviour to stay safe from HIV. For example, one drill uses a football to represent a condom with the coach playing the role of the virus, tagging players who enter a marked ‘risky’ area of the pitch without control of the ball.
By taking part in these drills the players reach a deeper understanding of the issues than they would by other means and it also stimulates lively discussion amongst the players and a rare opportunity to talk openly with an adult (the coach) about their concerns. TackleAfrica builds the capacity of it’s partners in Africa with coaching projects, sending out small numbers of FA-qualified football coaches to train local coaches, teachers, youth leaders, and peer educators in use of the TackleAfrica manual and delivering HIV messages through football. We work with partners to add value to the work they are already doing, so the use of our manual becomes a sustainable ‘add on’.
