More about The Grassroot Project
The project is developed in response to the need for HIV education and recreational activities in Southeast D.C. Student athletes will become certified 'coaches' through a 30-hour Athletes2Coaches training course. They will then deliver a full sports + HIV prevention education program over the course of 10 weeks (1.5 hours of on-site facilitation each week).
The education component is structured to address the prevention of HIV/AIDS through an interactive, games-based curriculum. This curriculum has been developed with the help of MetroTeenAIDS's staff and Street Team, and uses as its model Grassroot Soccer's internationally recognized and validated program. Youth will play sports they enjoy while learning and interacting with positive role models who can help them develop a love of learning and playing, as well as attitudes and skills to live healthy, positive, and HIV-free lives.
Student athletes will create a mutual understanding with people of different backgrounds from their own and will become knowledgeable about HIV/AIDS in general and specifically in Southeast D.C.. As a result of this experience, they will further develop as socially conscious citizens and future leaders.
