More about The Girls in Sport Program
The project aim is to encourage and promote participation of women and girls by promoting their abilities in sport and recreation for fun and excellence. Further the projects aims at providing a permanent approach to addressing the many challenges faced by the girl child in our region. It has grown out of the recognition that the girl child is in many cases not able to exploit her full potential as a person due to all kinds of cultural practices and believes, including their exploitation during the post elections violence that still prevail in many parts of Kenya. Some of them are being forced to undergo the Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
Over ninety percent of the girls undergoing this painful experience get married immediately after this rite, thus contributing to many of them dropping out of school. We need to reverse this trend by targeting all categories of suffering. . This project has been necessitated by the reasons: 1. Unequal access to education 2. Lack of enforcement of the children’s act and other relevant legislators 3. Late entry into school due to taking up extra chores at home especially with the spread of the HIV/AIDS pandemic 4. Being viewed as assets for marriage purpose
