More about The Co-operative StreetGames Young Volunteers
CSYV tackles the issue of social exclusion by using volunteering as a mechanism for integrating young people into the heart of their community. The programme supports young people aged 16-25 from disadvantaged areas to make the most of their talents and abilities through volunteering at their local StreetGames sport project. StreetGames neighbourhood workers recruit volunteers from existing projects or through outreach work and linking with partners at a local level, including youth clubs. Each project has a mentor who guides volunteers through a personalised development plan.
Volunteers are given opportunities to study for relevant qualifications including NGB coaching awards, Community Sports Leadership awards and other vocational qualifications relating to sport, health and nutrition. They also receive mentor training and are encouraged to set up their own youth led schemes for the benefit of other young people in terms of health, activity and community integration. CSYV has helped young people turn their back on crime, drugs and other forms of anti-social behaviour, and/or has given them focus and direction where this was lacking. This has prevented or reversed exclusion by helping volunteers become integral role models and leaders within their localities.
