More about Summer Academy
Through a creative mix of academics, athletics and new experiences, the Student-Athlete Summer Academy provides innovative learning opportunities for young people. The Summer Academy is a great opportunity to improve basic academic and leadership skills, reduce summer learning loss, and foster a unique appreciation for school in young people. Further, this sports-based summer program offers young people the additional value of learning critical leadership skills and developing a fundamental understanding and increased capability in their sport of choice.
As a primary sport of choice in the Chicago metro area, basketball can serve a primary method of engagement for young people. The sport is synergistically incorporated into the entire Summer Academy. The academic curriculum uses basketball in all components of the lesson plans – from reading and writing about basketball during the Language Arts class to using multiplication and fractions to calculate basketball statistics. During the athletic component of the program, participants learn fundamental basketball skills and life skills, including leadership and sportsmanship.
The combination of academics, athletics and leadership development help prepare young people for success in the classroom, on the court and in their community.
