More about STOP HIV (Sports Training and Outreach Program On HIV)
The Sports Training and Outreach Program (STOP HIV) is managed by the Oceania National Olympic Committees which is made up of 17 member countries in the Pacific. With the ultimate vision to prevent HIV and sexually transmitted infections among the youth of the Pacific, STOP HIV is based on 3 key principles:
1. That young people ‘hero worship’ top athletes and these athletes, when trained and supported can impact positively on young people’s life decisions
2. That Sport creates a safe space, a trusted environment to discuss issues and break down taboo topics such as sex and HIV which are very sensitive topics in the Pacific
3. That behaviour change does not happen quickly but requires constant engagement, building relationships and ongoing support and training.
As such, STOP HIV trains young coaches so they can deliver ongoing sessions with the young people. The Pacific Islands have some of the highest rates of sexually transmitted infections in the world with young people being at highest risk of infection. Through sports events, a community coach curriculum and training National Athletes as advocates, STOP HIV increases knowledge, reduces stigma and discrimination and prevents further transmission of HIV and STIs.
