More about Sports for All Abilities
The Indochina Starfish Foundation’s (ISF) Football Programme previously only reached persons without disabilities. Realising this, ISF conducted research with partner NGOs that specialise in working with people with disabilities in Phnom Penh and found that there was little to no opportunity available for these young people to participate in organised sports; they are excluded both from the benefits of participating in sport and the social engagement that comes with it.
In 2011, ISF launched the Sports for All Abilities programme and began to provide footballing opportunities, community involvement and social awareness education to deaf and hearing impaired youth. In 2013, ISF expanded its programmes to involve players with intellectual disabilities who had previously never participated in organised sports.
The Sports for All Abilities programme has enabled these young players in Cambodia to develop confidence, self-esteem, team work and leadership, and helped break down social barriers through integration with other players. The programme has developed greatly over the past 3 years and we look forward to the programme expanding and developing further into the future.
