More about Sport Team of The Year
Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) uses football to deliver positive social messages to the community & empower individuals to improve their lives.
Charlton believes it has a responsibility to make a difference in society.
CACT’s “Street Violence Ruins Lives” (SVRL) project illustrates this, and warns of the dangers of anti-social behaviors and gun and knife crime. This initiative was created following the tragic stabbing of Rob Knox, a young Charlton supporter. His mum, Sally, now works full time for CACT as a life coach and talks in schools about the dangers of carrying weapons gives a real life account of the impact and implications of murder.
Using the platform of a home game CACT raises the profile of SVRL. Launched in 2007 and run every season since, a first team home match is used to amplify this message.
Charlton V Millwall saw rival teams for the first time ever remove sponsors' branding from the front of both teams playing shirts and allowed these to be replaced with the SVRL logo. This game and campaign attracted 54 separate press articles, reaching an estimated audience of 9 million people.
