More about Sports Against Tobacco
Our organization guards the next generation from tobacco, working with children from resource poor backgrounds and engaging them through competitive sport. We recognize the child’s unfulfilled desire to play. The playground acts as a tool to attract children. The project design integrates serious sports training with life-skill building.
The sports training is done through recognized coaches, most of them having played or coached for the country. Organized sport provides the experience of training/coaching and tournaments/matches, where winning builds confidence, and losing a match results in reflection, ability to deal with failure, further focused practice and another opportunity to play. Competition allows the child to take the learning seriously. Life skill development is an integral part of the project and not a by-product.
Children are encouraged to learn through reflection, workshops and regular diary writing. The daily ritual of playing the sport for three years, subconsciously converts concepts like team-work, discipline, hard-work and leadership into an integral part of their personality. To bring in more children into our fold we have increased our sports offering to include cricket, field-hockey and long-distance running.
