More about Sport Internship Training for Unemployed Persons (SIT-UP)
In current times, unemployment, particularly of our youth (ages 16-27) is of significant proportion. This situation significantly threatens our economy therefore it has become incumbent upon us all to examine ways in which various sectors may provide pathways towards employment using home-grown solutions.
The SIT-UP Initiative provides opportunity for unemployed persons to accumulate skills, qualifications and experience which includes the care for children, sport coaching and facility management, while at the same time receiving a monthly stipend.
Interns assist children in schools every day through the facilitation of the Move-It, Moving Matters™ Programme. There are 11,000 children in Soweto alone involved in this Programme.
After school, Inters are helping children with homework and assisting with the coaching of Cricket, Tennis and Soccer at selected Community Centres. Children now have the opportunity to go to these Community Centres in the afternoon and spend their time productively, learning new skills and achieving their homework which takes pressure off caregivers at home.
