More about Solar Powered FIFA World Cup
Over 1 billion dollar is spent daily to burn kerosene, Candles and petrol by Nigeria poor; a country with a population of over 150million people and more than 70% are poor without access to electricity. The best medium to better reach our youths is through sports and FIFA 2010 offered an invigorating excitement to local dwellers to forget about their problems by sharing the passion and love of the football season together but for Iwerekun community; a small village in Lagos state without accessible road, portable water or electricity, it would be different since there is no access to electricity except for few that owns a fossil fuel generator.
The project offered a revered opportunity to the community during the world cup periods; a 10KVA solar farm with 8-module solar panel and an LG- Viewing screen was installed to give the entire village electricity to watch world cup matches Live as well as Train local communities how to replace dangerous and toxic kerosene lantern/candles with a safe Solar lantern and install small scale solar devices to power their businesses.
