More about Silanga Sports Field Upgrade
In 2004, Tim Challen went to testify in a Magistrates Court located in Kibera slum, Nairobi, after having been victim of gun crime during a business trip to the Kenyan capital. Seeing the lack of opportunities in Kibera slum and the economic divisions that exist within Nairobi, Challen decided to return to Kibera slum (from Geneva, where he is based) and work with local residents to upgrade a sports field in their community, using the field as way of engaging young women and men towards positive action.
The upgrade process, along with the sporting and social activities which take place on the sports field, have helped turn a hot-spot for crime into a safe public space for the community. Moreover, KI has helped bring many Kenyan and International stakheolders into the community, which have in turn helped with the development of the area.
