More about Show a Red Card to End Child Abuse
There are around 3,000 children roaming the streets of Davao. Many of them are abused adolescent girls - being confronted with issues on prostitution & trafficking, labelling and stigmatization, sexual and substance abuse and lack of access to health & education. They are often discriminated by those who do not understand their situation. Without intervention, they are often excluded from social activities, driven to the streets to seek solace and acceptance among their peers.
Most often, they are forced to nurture risk taking behaviours and tend to engage in anti-social activities that lowers further their self worth. But still, like typical children, they are full of dreams and promise. Tambayan’s as part of its psycho-social services to adolescent girls in the streets adopted a sports based approach to: 1. Foster social inclusion for the street children 2. Foster diversion from risk taking and anti-social behaviours 3. Develop self-discipline and self confidence 4. Reinforce and hone their education 5. Build and strengthen partnership with other service providers and patrons, specially among NGOs, private sectors and local government units. 6. Increase social accountablility and responsibility We utilize football as a bridgehead to elicit public understanding on the plight of street children.
