More about Scoring Through Education
Scoring Through Education (STE) uses sport to tackle the issue of education by motivating students to stay in school and achieve educational success. The Fire recognizes the importance of receiving a quality education, and therefore, strives to motivate children to stay in school as well as help them flourish while they are there. Due to recent state budget cuts, educational programs such as STE are needed more than ever. This program has a very successful track record and aims to expand its reach every year.
The Fire is extremely dedicated to supporting school districts in our community, including Chicago Public Schools (CPS). CPS is the 3rd largest school district in the country serving over 400,000 students. With over 86% of its students coming from low-income families, a drop-out rate of near 50% and an exceptionally high rate of violence, these kids need the support and motivation to help them stay in school and deter them from activities that feed into these numbers.
Also, this unique program helps cross language barriers and allows us to serve the diverse needs of our community. Seeing as over 40% of CPS students are Hispanic, program materials are provided in both English and Spanish.
