More about Yuwa
Society teaches girls to fit in. Yuwa coaches girls to stand out.
Yuwa works girls in rural Jharkhand, the state with some of the highest rates of female illiteracy, child marriage, and human trafficking in India. Here, 6 out of 10 girls drop out of school and become child brides.
Through football and education, Yuwa helps girls take their futures into their own hands. By bringing vulnerable girls out of isolation and into a positive team environment, Yuwa combats child marriage and human trafficking. This intensely participatory model produces supremely confident girls and powerful belief changes.
Girls in Yuwa break the cycle of poverty by creating a counter-culture of empowerment where it’s cool to be an ambitious girl. Girls in Yuwa participate heavily in planning their own programs and that sense of ownership and responsibility over the programs contributes to girls’ leadership development.
What makes Yuwa different? It’s organic, it’s ongoing and it’s local. And it’s intense. On average, girls in Yuwa spend between 1,200 and 2,400 hours per year in Yuwa programs.
Yuwa girls have inspired millions, but most of all, they inspire one another.
