More about Yuwa
Through team sports, Yuwa provides a platform for young women to gain confidence to make a change in their world and the world. By combating child marriage and human trafficking in India we help young girls find their voice and re-write the script of their lives. We teach girls to become community leaders they are all capable of becoming by playing a huge role in the direction of the programing itself. Yuwa's teams begin humbly: They practice 6 days a week by choice.
The girls save money for shoes and practice barefoot on the brown pastures that pass for soccer fields often walking hours to reach the practice fields. But over time, the players gain a sense of commitment, a rededication to schooling, and confidence they would otherwise lack. Among its early accomplishments: None of the girls from the original team got married in their teens, unlike their older sisters. Several are now in college. A few players made the Indian national team. Success on the field is secondary: "If you make winning your goal, you won't really achieve much because you'll start caring about the scoreboard and not the kids' development." - Franz Gastler
