Issue: Mistrust, misunderstanding and the just concluded 30 years long ethnic war of the country had caused closure of all the linkages of youth belongs to the three major ethnic groups –Sinhalese/Tamil/Muslim of the country depriving the recognition of youth as a major stake holder in rural community development. Focus; With the objective of creating youth interaction between all three ethnic groups to achieve understanding, Peace and harmony among them and creating healthy and sustainable relationships at different socio/economic/age levels of youth in different geographical areas, we started a networking process by holding annual youth camp.
We introduced different types of traditional/non traditional team competitions throughout the 3 day youth camp for youth of all the ethnic groups to promote and develop their team work ability, leadership and cultural and behavioural changes. We have been able to create dialogue and interaction for youth in different back grounds, ethnic groups, abilities and experience to share their knowledge, culture and life skills while mould them to continue as peer trainers in promoting sports such as team competition at their village level to attract more local youth towards establishing appropriate youth development programme at various levels and sectors.
