More about Youth in Action
The community of Eldorado has a population density of over 14,000 people per square km and is characterised by great deprivation and extremely high levels of interpersonal violence both within and outside of homes. There are few public services and virtually no offer of sports and leisure activities. Through the offer of diverse regular sporting activities delivered morning, afternoon and evening by mixed teams of local coaches and youth monitors drawn from the community, the children significantly increase their life skills to be better equipped to deal with their environment and their future. We particularly focus on improving the life skills which have been shown to be key for reducing the likelihood of young people falling into youth offending which are: decision-making, coping with emotions (particularly impulsiveness), empathy and improved bonding to society (Farrington, 2003: Developmental and life-course criminology); they have a wider understanding of the options they may have for further training, education and work opportunities and will be better prepared to undertake them by exposing them to new experiences.
