More about Youth Empowerment through Sports (YES)
DADREG uses football to reach out to children & youth who work or scavenge in the Dandora dumpsite with a view of rehabilitating them & taking them back to school & training institutions to get education and skills. It is estimated that 10,000 people work or scavenge in the dumpsite, 55% of this are youth and children between the ages of 4-18 years. It is also estimated that 65% of these children are of school going age, but due of poverty, are forced to work with their mothers in the dumpsite in order to supplement family income. Majority of the children and youth left school because they could not afford tuition fees, school uniforms, reading or writing materials. While some of these children would go to work in the dumpsite to get money to buy books or uniforms, it becomes difficult for them to go back because they could not raise enough money to buy what the schools require and with time drop out of school.
To reach out to these children and gain their trust, DADREG used football as a means of laying foundation & getting to know their problems back home or in the dumpsite. Through football, these children led us to their dwellings to first hand the conditions they live in.
