More about Youth And Leaders Living Actively (YALLA)

YALLA uses the motivation that soccer gives the refugee youth as a catalyst in learning English, their new language, while honing in on math and language fundamentals through a unique curriculum integrated in this rigorous soccer training program. Youth are engaged to collectively reflect on their identity, acclimate to their new culture, and thereby feel more empowered in school and giving back to their community through service.

The objective behind the soccer league is to emphasize leadership and discipline, while the combined scholastic program’s objective is to develop the children participants’ academic success in school, providing the structured and supportive environment needed to pursue higher education. The program’s philosophy is that through soccer the children will have a greater opportunity to succeed in their new academic and social settings.

The soccer league combats and helps alleviate the phenomenon of idle and alienated refugee youth who are rebuilding their lives in the unfamiliar county of San Diego. In addition, the league strives to mollify the tension within neighborhoods, helping to eliminate the stigma associated with refugee groups, thus aiding their assimilation into their new communities by unifying them for a mutual goal, which is to compete.
