More about YES
YES originally was funded with a two-year grant from the U.S. Department of State (Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs), YES-Ghana was designed by IU faculty to educate and train Ghanaian teachers involved with sports to create after-school recreational sports, health education, and leadership development programs.
More specifically, we used sport as a vehicle to garner interest and attendance. In doing so, the participants learn a variety of sports then are required to learn about important social issues that are applicable to their area. For example, drugs/alcohol, sexually transmitted diseases, and teen pregnancy. Our project focuses on 8/9 Middle Schools with over 120 participants at each site. This grant is renewable and will take place in Botswana next year. And then another impoverished country after that.
