More about Wooden Spoon Community Rugby
Spoon Community Rugby’s new and innovative project uses rugby to tackle issues and problems faced by socially disadvantaged youngsters around the UK & Ireland by delivering unique, rugby based projects, designed to address the specific needs of each group. Spoon has identified particular issues through extensive formal evaluation during twelve pilot projects that rugby is uniquely able to address including health improvement, anti-social behaviour education, anger management, respect for others, homelessness, disability relief and lack of opportunity.
Rugby is exceptional in its ability to cater for all shapes, sizes and personalities attracting youngsters who wouldn’t normally consider participating in sport. By harnessing the support, enthusiasm and experience of the rugby community to help deliver projects, focus is placed on respect, teamwork and discipline. Attracting both boys and girls, notable successful projects include ‘Try Rugby’ tackling obesity in children, ‘Onside’ targeting 16-18 year olds with no qualifications and ‘Try for Life’ helping young offenders. Participation results in happier youngsters through healthier lifestyles, increased self-esteem and greatly improved long-term prospects.
Spoon continues to build on its success by improving on past experiences, supported by the rugby community and sustained by funding from a combination of grants, fundraising and donations.
