More about Women’s Homeless World Cup

The Homeless World Cup is an annual, international football tournament, uniting teams of people who are homeless and excluded to take a once in a lifetime opportunity to represent their country and change their lives forever. It has triggered and supports grass roots football projects in over 70 nations working with over 30,000 homeless people all year.

Until the 6th Melbourne 2008 Homeless World Cup (1-7 December) national teams have been mixed with both men and women playing on the same team. In Melbourne 8 nations were selected to participate in a pilot Women’s Homeless World Cup: Australia, Cameroon, Colombia, Kyrgyz Republic, Philippines, Uganda, Zambia and Paraguay.

The dedicated Women’s Cup also included workshops on leadership; making your dreams a reality; and sharing and learning from the women’s grass roots projects. It was a declared a resounding success with the strength of support the women demonstrated for each other and the sense of community they quickly created was noted by all. Zambia became the first time Women’s Homeless World Cup champions. Player Meranda Namafe, Team Zambia summed it up: “We have put Zambia on the map now that we are World Champions.”
