Only 13% of the U.S. workforce was employed in STEM occupations as of 2016, while the vast majority (87%) was employed in other occupations. More than half of Americans don’t pursue STEM careers because they believe the subjects are too hard. Our foundation is driven to impacting youth in an array of fields, but specifically towards the introduction and implementation of STEM learning. We understand the excitement of sports for most youth and have found a unique way of introducing STEM through the lens of sports. The DIY STEM: Sports in Science curriculum is a FREE hands on, project based activities that encourage teamwork, collaboration, perseverance, and critical thinking themes that are also present in the National Football League and essential for NY Giants Victor Cruz’s success. The six STEM concepts, Material Science, Newton’s Law of Motion, Nutrition Body Systems, Sound waves, and the Salsa Kinesiology, marry relevant academic themes taught in school to make DIY type activities cool, fun and hands on activities. The 6 week curriculum wraps up in a Family Night, where instructors create an activity for the students to teach back what they’ve learned to family.
