More about Uganda Charity Trust
Our first priority as a charity is to take disadvantaged kids, both boys and girls, from diverse social and tribal backgrounds, get them into schools and attend to their pastoral care. We also fund mentoring and counseling support, so that all the kids have a productive and rewarding school life, whatever their sporting abilities. The majority of the funding we raise goes to pay school fees. But sport is also a crucial activity for us. It provides the children with a real sense of unity and belonging, and the impact on all our “charity kids” is dramatic; as one of them said “it is my family”.
Sport gives the kids a focus; they love to see the UCTF Cricket Team at the top of the National Cricket League (as it was last year), and to see their more senior colleagues representing Uganda at tennis and athletics. They are enormously proud to be a part of UCTF, and this feeds through into academic performance and behavior.
So, in conclusion, sport delivers a demonstrable improvement in the behavior, attitude and application of the children we support, and provides a level of social inclusion that cannot be achieved by just paying their school fees. We cannot justify diverting money from school fees to fund a cricket team or to resurface our tennis courts, so we are now looking for a more significant sponsor to fund our sports programmes.
