More about Transforming Lives with United Through Sport South Africa’s Junior School of Excellence Programme
Although 98.8% of children enroll at schools in Grade One, less than half make it into Grade 12 in South Africa. There is an average 12% dropout rate after Junior School in the disadvantaged township areas where we work in Nelson Mandela Bay. While there are pockets of excellence where teachers and learners from schools in the townships rise above their environment, most township schools have low quality education. United Through Sport's Junior School of Excellence Programme is about nurturing participants with ability and determination to give them access to extra academic education and personal development. We do this with focused sport training and academic tutoring after school. This enables our participants to be on a more equal footing with children who go to schools in the suburbs. We have also recently introduced a GirlsUnite project, focuses on empowering the girls in the Junior School of Excellence Programme - with self-defense and sexual health classes.
