More about The Goal is Green - Food Recovery Initiative
Back in May 2007, the Montreal Canadiens organization launched the “Goal is Green” program, an ambitious and vast project to place the Club at the forefront of all environmental leaders in professional sports. Every year, the Centre Bell attracts more than 1 million spectators to their hockey games, while another million people walk through the doors to watch over 120 shows, for a total of 2 million spectators. This means that thousands of meals are prepared during the day of an event. Even though cooks aim to minimize food surplus, they cannot afford to run out of meals. Thus, after each hockey game and each show, the staffs of the kitchens and the suites works to recover the food that has not been eaten and is still suitable for consumption. Since, the Centre Bell provides the equivalent of 115,000 meals each year, it makes a huge difference for Montreal organizations that served meals for people who it most. For the Centre Bell, the initiative reduces the cost of the waste management and reduces its indirect greenhouse gas emissions produce by the degradation of food in landfills and contributes significantly to the welfare of the community.
